Organic Gardening
Organic gardening is a great way to relieve stress and get some extra exercise during the
day. Not to mention that it is a very healthy hobby to have!
In order to go about organic gardening in the proper way, you will need some basic
information about the subject. Do not let this scare you, organic gardening is nothing short
of relaxing and easy, I just want to make sure you start out on the right foot so to speak.
The main ingredient in a healthy garden is the soil. Make sure that your soil is fresh and
full of nutrients. Since you are going to be organic gardening and not using chemicals you
will need to use compost in your soil in order to make sure that it is full of natural
nutrients and insect free.
There are two ways to go about getting compost. You can either create it yourself or you can
go buy it at any hardware store. It is of course cheaper to make it yourself if you have the
time. The technique is extremely easy to do and does not require too much space. There are
three types of composting: slow, fast, and worm composting. Fast composting is the technique
used most often because it takes only six to eight weeks for the compost to be ready and it
is very good for controlling weeds.
Once you have your soil full of nutrients and ready to go you will need to make sure you
till it before planting any fruits or vegetables. You can do this with either a machine or
by hand depending on the size of your organic garden. It is recommended by experts to till
the soil by hand because it helps preserve the soil structure.
Now for the fun part, insects and weed control! This is not as bad as it seems and is the
main reason you are growing your own vegetables organically. Grocery stores use chemicals to
kill the pests but unless you don’t want an organic garden anymore you are not allowed to do
that! There are some organic pesticides that you can use to help you combat the little
critters but there are plenty of other options. Frogs, toads, trap crops, companion plants,
and other beneficial insects can be used to naturally keep the unwanted pests out of your
garden.
